10 Years of Resentment [Episode5]

I’m Mariko (38). Ten years ago, my husband, Yoshihiro (38), and I were out with his family to watch a sporting event and go to a restaurant afterward. On the way, I got a blister from my shoes, so I stopped with our son, Yuma—only to get completely left behind. I was deeply hurt that not a single one of them noticed we were gone or even bothered to look for us. I snapped at my husband about it so many times, but all I got were brushed-off responses like “Yeah, yeah, my bad” or “I don’t even remember that.” That just made me even angrier. And yet, here they were again, inviting me to another sporting event like nothing ever happened.

For ten long years, I kept blaming them in my head, thinking things like, “What is wrong with my husband?” “I can’t believe him and his family,” or “Their priorities are completely twisted.” Every time I brought it up, he never gave me a genuine apology or showed any real remorse, which only fueled my rage.

But the moment I changed my approach, he actually listened and said, “Got it.” That’s when I realized: all this time, I was just expressing anger without ever clearly telling him what I actually needed him to do.

Knowing I can handle things differently from now on—by changing my mindset and how I communicate—makes me feel like I can finally let go of some of that built-up resentment.
