I am a family of three: my husband, our college-student daughter Mao, and me, Sakura. Due to a congenital condition, Mao, our only child, cannot have children. My husband and I waited until she was old enough before carefully explaining her condition to her. Though it took some time, I believe Mao has come to accept it. Aside from being unable to have kids, Mao grew up completely healthy and without any issues. Her student life went smoothly, surrounded by good friends, as she fully enjoyed her youth with club activities and part-time jobs.

Mao cannot have children, and she understood this herself. Then, Mao came to me with the news that she had gotten a boyfriend who is working. Seeing her bashfully smiling with joy filled me with happiness too. However, Mao hasn’t told him yet that she can’t have kids. While I understand why it’s a difficult topic to bring up, he is a working adult. Their relationship might develop with an eye toward the future. If so, I can’t help but hope she approaches the situation with honesty and care.
