I’m glad that my words got through to my husband more than I expected. My husband persuaded my father-in-law to take on the role of caring for my grandmother-in-law, and my mother-in-law’s burden was greatly reduced. If I had left the group at that time because I didn’t want to help with the caregiving, I might have regretted it later. Caring for someone shouldn’t be a burden that falls on just one person, and if it’s “because we’re family,” then I think that all family members should feel a sense of ownership and think about what they can do. I gratefully accepted my mother-in-law’s apology, and I hope to get along with my in-laws as much as I can as a daughter-in-law.
