I’m Seira. I live with my husband Kotaro, our 4-year-old daughter, and our 2-year-old son. We live in a first-floor unit of an apartment building owned by my father-in-law. It’s built right on my in-laws’ property, directly across from their house. They were kind enough to let us move in when our daughter was born. They’re super helpful and love taking care of their grandkids. But… there’s just one big problem. My mother-in-law keeps using her spare key to barging in whenever she wants.

Honestly, it was super uncomfortable when she came in while I was totally naked or braless. Still, I couldn’t help but worry about worst-case scenarios when my husband was away—like getting locked in the bathroom with the kid, or passing out.
So having her right next door, ready to walk in at any moment, gave me peace of mind. That’s how I convinced myself to accept it.
