I’m Ran, and I live with my husband, Kota. Just the two of us—no kids. My dad lives back at my childhood home. I’m told my mother cheated and walked out on us when I was only four. Thanks to my dad and everyone around me, I’ve managed to lead a good life. But then, out of nowhere, I got a call from someone claiming to be my “brother.” He said our mother doesn’t have long to live and wants to see me one last time. As if I’d ever go. Honestly, I think a part of me always wanted her, but I’ve kept those feelings buried deep inside. How can she be so selfish, coming back now just to mess with my head? Still, I’m glad I finally realized exactly what kind of person she really is.

Maybe someday, way down the road, I’ll regret not seeing her. But I’m going to live my life to the fullest so that I can look back and know I made the right call. I have zero intention of ever speaking to or meeting that half-brother again. If inheritance ever comes up, I’ll just disclaim it and let a professional handle the paperwork. I don’t hold a grudge against the family she started after she left me, either. I’m just so grateful my dad and grandparents stepped up and raised me with so much love. With that gratitude in my heart, I’m going to focus on being even happier from here on out.
