I’m Kanami. Seeing Kippei inhale the snacks Ayumu bought with his own pocket money filled me with pure rage and deep despair. Even when I confronted him, he just smirked and said, “Geez, food grudges are scary!” He showed zero remorse, even with his own son in tears right in front of him. Realizing then and there that “this man will never change,” I dropped the D-word: divorce. Of course, it was the result of years of pent-up frustration, but more than anything, I couldn’t forgive him for letting his own greed make Ayumu cry.

When I brought up divorce, Kippei completely missed the point, exclaiming, “Over a bag of chips!?” I had to lay out exactly what the real problem was. Seeing him turn pale as he finally grasped the gravity of the situation and started apologizing, I decided to give him one last chance. I gave him a final warning—one more time and we’re done instantly—and then pleaded with him to go to professional counseling. He was shocked at first, but eventually gave me a somber nod of agreement. I don’t know what the future holds, but for now, I have to try and believe that he can truly change…
