I’m Kaori (46). My husband Yuichi (46) was asked by his parents, who are ballroom dance instructors, to eventually take over their studio. After getting back into ballroom dancing for the first time in 25 years, he started spending every weekend staying overnight at the studio, claiming he needed to practice. On top of that, those late-night practice sessions were with his ex-girlfriend Suzuka, who used to be his dance partner. My husband insists it’s “strictly for the sake of ballroom dancing,” but I just couldn’t shake my anxiety.

When I walked into the studio, there was my husband, lounging in casual clothes and drinking a canned beer. Right next to him was Suzuka, also dressed casually with a beer in her hand. Isn’t that bizarre? Why would someone about to go home bother changing into loungewear?
To make matters worse, there was a double futon laid out in the studio with two pillows. It was neatly made and didn’t look like it had been used yet. But expecting the two of them to crawl into it together just… made too much sense.
Leaving me standing there in utter shock, my husband rushed out the door, saying he was going to walk Suzuka home.
